Ombre Landscapes
— Showcasing the seamless blend of colors across horizons, capturing nature’s breathtaking transitions from light to dark, warm to cool, and day to night.
Early one June a beautiful and vibrant ombre sunset splashed across the sky! Striking colors halted me in my tracks, then Blue hour began to fall after sunset and the Red Wing Blackbirds sang as the crickets hummed - the meadow was settling in for the night.
The foreground was bathed in a soft light highlighting every grain of grass illustrating the transition from Spring green to summer.
This lovely meadow was where I flew kites with my children and our Lab pit mix ran free amongst the flowers. Extremely honored that this moment was featured on the 85th anniversary cover wrap of the Tennessee Conservationist magazine.
Veils of mist begin to rise from the lake and a goose glides peacefully in morning stillness.
Cerulean blues and golden yellow reflect upon a watercolor like lake shimmering as if a mirage. The sunrises of Fall provide beautiful saturated light due to the lower angle of the sun and more molecules of light that the sun's rays have to pass through to our atmosphere creating a dynamic landscape.
This was the moment in the meadow, when the earth begins to come alive! The golden light falls across the meadow, creating an ethereal glow. The subtle fragrance of sweet blossoms linger on the soft breeze and petals float, slowly down landing on a meandering creek. Coming back to this spot again and again throughout the seasons brings a sense of peace at Shelby Farms Park Conservancy.
Light and shadow drama from high atop the Memphis Pyramid on the deck to photograph September’s Super Moon, I turned around and saw an amazing view of the Mississippi. The land sizzled below in heat and humidity, while a top of the pyramid breezes cooled the air. The rolling river flowed into the horizon, as cars traveled the giant “M” bridge at twilight. The sky was bursting with deep blues and fiery yellows and oranges around the setting sun!
A deep polar vortex freeze in 2017 created a winter wonderland for several days. Hyde Lake in Shelby Farms Park was ablaze with the sunset reflecting off the glass like frozen water. Small ice pellets left tracks from the brisk and frigid wind on the ice.
In meteorology, this wondrous stage of sunset is called “The Belt of Venus”, which appears on the horizon. The moment was simply breathtaking!
The February Wolf Moon rises in Shelby Farms Park Conservancy above a silhouetted tree over a winter meadow. Stillness and calm fell across the meadow as the Wolf Moon glowed from above onto the snowy landscape.
The sunset afterglow at twilight continued to change and deepen into these beautiful vibrant blues, peaches, oranges, and saturated shades of pinks and lavender.
We stumbled upon this beach and rock formation on our trip driving down Highway 1 to Big Sur. Navigating a narrow dirt road, we hiked a small sandy path through a dense grove of trees, we were surprised when the path opened up to the vast Pacific Ocean at the sunset.
To our left were giant rock cliffs and to our right was the iconic Pfeiffer Keyhole Rock. Miraculously the sun aligned behind the keyhole shape and cast a beautiful stream of light on the water.
Surfers glide on the horizon, sun shines over textured rocks in the foreground and soft cotton candy cotton cloud reflect on aqua water.
A moment in heaven, the light was bathed in a pastel color palette - the Pacific Ocean looked amazingly just like this and created an unforgettable experience.
The hike to the top of Kuwohi was memorable and life changing! Named by the Cherokee, meaning mulberry place - Kuwohi is a sacred and ancestral land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. It reaches a height of 6,643FT and is the tallest mountain in the Smoky Mountains with constantly changing weather.
Stopping to catch our breath on the hike up, we observed the changing climate and radiant nature of the mountain's region in a Spruce-Fir dominated forest. After we reached the top, with temps in the mid-50's, the clouds had started to part and we had a spectacular view of sun rays breaking through the clouds. Was so very grateful to be able to photograph this special moment on the hike down the mountain.
