Biodiversity of Cross Creek Watershed

we are all connected not just in nature, we are nature! When you were a child do you remember exploring a forest of wandering in the woods? This article is about preserving and maintaining those rich Forest habitats with fungi (mychorrizae) that can create a healthy for ecosystem and increase timber yields long term! I had the amazing opportunity to work on this photoessay project with Professor Dr. Jonathan Evans of the University of the South, Sewanee and Dr. Sarah Neumann of Tennessee State University. Jon and Sarah and students of Sewanee along with many others, spanning 50 years gathered datasets that show what is happening in a forest and why! Their intergenerational research will predict the outcome of forests, which gives us hope!

Roots grow strong in nature, especially in Ely

Roots Grow Strong in Nature (Ely Echo Newspaper) - Falling in my grandfather’s Finnish-American footsteps we traveled to Ely, Minnesota to experience what it was like growing up in a small bustling community perched on the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The area is bordered by one of the largest contiguous Old Growth Forests in the Continental America and dotted with hundreds of lakes!

Mid-South Raptor Center

Raptor’s Bring Balance & Beauty to Our Ecosystems! Raptors live and thrive in urban/suburban environments with careful monitoring and conservation. The most common threat is pesticides used in agriculture, land development and car accidents. Raptors are often treated for gunshot wounds and from being hit by a car. The Kestrel is the smallest, most colorful, dynamic and agile! Eagles and hawks among many others help keep our ecosystems clean by balancing our rodent populations.

Copper Iris

Copper Iris - An incredible adventure it was outside of Memphis in Meeman-Shelby Forest to spend 3 and a half hours standing in a swamp with this beautiful wildflower among towering Cypress trees! It was an honor to collaborate on this article with Ranger Jeff Hill, by contributing photography for the endemic and ephemeral Copper Iris, a wild flower that grows in wetland and swamps.

The Tennessee Conservationist - 85th Anniversary Edition - July/August 2022

Fall’s Spectrum of Color and Nature at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis

Summer Meadow - A beautiful sunset like I had never seen in June, radiated over the meadows of Shelby Farms Park Conservancy! Coming back to this meadow for over a decade allowed me to enjoy its changing light and witness this spectacular nature moment. It was a special honor and meaningful to contribute to this image to the magazine’s environmental legacy and nature conservation.
